Having used FF miles extensively I suggest always using a specific airline card. The price of the ticket is a non-issue since it is free anyway (with exception of the security fees, etc.)and you can combine those earned miles with those earned through the specific airline travel. Those cards claiming to use any airline are exclusive from any airline issued miles. Some cards disquise it as points. So, in order to get a free ticket using card miles you have to spend $25K+ on that specific card. On the other hand, using Citibank AA Advantage, Delta Skymiles AMEX, etc. you can combine miles with the flights taken, telephone partners, hotel and rental cars and the like. Flights are earned much quicker that way with an overall accumulation program. That has worked well for me over the years. I spend enough on just one card doing repairs on my properties each year that I can earn a trip to Hawaii as my reward! Aloha
