I haven't had a problem since retiring many years ago. However, you probably already have an Amex card. If so, you don't need a card that limits you to one airline + partners. Amex has a program (yes, they charge an extra fee, but so do the other cards giving mileage credit) for ff miles, so check to see which airlines are current partners. I long ago dropped those other airline cards, especially since I can redeem Amex miles for rental cars & can choose among several airlines. My old airline cards kept ageing out my miles & canceling them. They also kept raising the price of tickets. I've never encountered blackout dates w/Amex.
